Each Month We Rise to a New Challenge

Are there prizes? Sure! But they are small. The big win comes from the collective positive energy we put into the world with our good work. Not enough for ya? I get it. I feel the same way sometimes - I wonder if I can “add anything more to my plate,” or “do I really have time for another thing.” I tell myself - “Don’t even bother starting, you’re not going to see it through,” or “doing one small thing a day isn’t going to change the world.”

And no, it won’t. One month of a challenge won’t change the world.

But it will change you. Even one day can change you.

If you don’t finish the month, so what? Start again next month. If you don’t do everything in the challenge, so what? You did more than you would have if you hadn’t joined.

Might you make a new friend, form a new habit, try something new?

Yes!

Then again, you might just finish the challenge and - at the end of the month - look back and say “Wow, done already?”

Now the prizes are things like Amazon or Chipotle gift cards. The real wins come when…

  • Your child sees you doing something for yourself

  • Your partner joins you for a walk

  • Your team tries something new because you tried it first

  • You discover a new hobby you just might continue

  • You make time to have coffee with a friend, and reconnect after time apart

  • You look in the mirror after an hour of self-care (maybe a haircut, pedicure, massage?)

  • You see yourself laughing in a photograph

  • You decide to apply for the new job

  • You take time to notice the sunset for the first time in weeks (or months, or years)

  • Your dog cuddles up to you because you finally sat down

  • You realize, just a little bit more, how much you bring to the world around you

  • Someone says, “Wow - I like this new side of you!” (It was there all along!)

Reflections during past challenges

What is a habit stack you will try?

I am going to put my cell phone on the charger for at least 5 minutes (new habit) in my bedroom every day when I get home from work and put my work bag in my bedroom (current habit).

How do you prioritize relationships?

Every Monday and Friday I call my mom to check in. My most ingrained habit to date.

When do you say your list of strengths?

I read it to myself just before crawling into bed for the night

How do you get a great start to the day?

I open my curtains first thing in the morning to let the sunshine in.

Smile at someone today - what happened?

I am not great at eye contact with people unless i have a really trusting relationship - so smiling at someone feels very vulnerable! But I did it and they smiled back!

When did something happen to you that turned out for the best?

I had a boss steal an idea that I'd come up with at work - legit copy and put his name on it - today I can say I am grateful because it was the impetus I needed to realize that it wasn’t the workplace for me.
